Figure 1: The great New York artist Knox Martin’s recent masterpiece
Teacher:I was overwhelmed with a sense of profound
sadness because not many see the beauty of this awesome
Knox Martin piece. When I talked about Hillary Clinton,
the responses were multiple and immediate. Apparently,
people’s minds are more easily swayed by
sensation than solid beauty. Much more!
The very fact that Master Knox himself shows the
painting on a rooftop in New York City means the work is important,
and it warrants continuous viewing. In fact, the painting
is a rare gem in the journal of mainstream art, whether you
understand it or not.
O’Keef ego: What have you seen that we failed to see?
Teacher: We are actually seeing the same thing, the only difference is,
you have failed to recognize it! But that makes a world of difference!
Let me give you an example. The other day my dog Brando chased down
a man on a raft. To the eyes of a dog, the poor guy was just another monkey
on a raft! Brando did not recognize that it was a man and therefore
feel that he should be given due respect.
O’Keef ego: Oh yeah? How does the painting register in
you then?
Teacher: Splendid! I say Knox should receive a Nobel
prize for it! The slender white going into red, a
great field of white setting apart the poetic
formations to its vicinity. Exquisite! It is the first
time in mainstream art that the entire face is a
painting.
That invention can hardly be lost on me… . Its powerful
metaphor could not have spoken louder on a rooftop–as
on a lofty mountain top!
The face, what a face! It clearly won’t allow you to
forget it anytime soon!
