The following pages torn from Edgar Allan Poe’s Rationale of Verse give us a glimpse into the discipline we call “verse”. Edgar Allan Poe, who wrote his first world-class poem at the age of 10, tells us that verse is a very specific thing! Hence verse, not unlike painting,is very much a discipline governed by a set of internal mathematical laws specific to itself. Once again, we get a little closer understanding the truth that beauty is simply the expression of supreme mathematical relationships. The beauty found in great musical composition, calligraphy, painting, sculpture or poetry are essentially ONE!
I am beginning to doubt, with the exception of a handful of people in the world, if anyone can see that truth!
